Abraham Lincoln

Picture
Abraham Lincoln was the president of the United States during the Civil War. He apposed three things as a person. The first thing he apposed was slavery, he was the first president to be against slavery (let people know.) The second thing he apposed was States Rights, he thought the states should answer to the federal government. The third thing he apposed was war, he thought they should only go to war when it was needed. "A house divided against itself cannot stand."

 Ulysses Grant

Picture
Grant was the war general selected by Lincoln after Robert E. Lee declined the position. Grant was a failure at everything in life except being a war general and being a husband. Grants army forced Robert E. Lee to surrender in 1865.
"When news of the surrender first reached our lines our men commenced firing a salute of a hundred guns in honor of the victory. I at once sent word, however, to have it stopped. The Confederates were now our prisoners, and we did not want to exult over their downfall."

Jefferson Davis

Picture
Davis was the president of the Confederate States of America. He was not president by choice, he wanted to be the general. The states liked having having him as president because he was a pushover letting them make most of the decisions. He appointed great war generals as president, but he always argued with them. “I worked night and day for twelve years to prevent the war, but I could not. The North was mad and blind, would not let us govern ourselves, and so the war came.”

Robert E. Lee

Picture
Robert E. Lee was important to the Civil War because he was the General of The Confederate Army. Lee was extremely respected by the North and the South. He was Lincoln's first choice of war general. Lee declined Lincoln's offer to become the General of the South. Although Lee did not agree with the South's opinions on slavery and states rights, he was born in Virginia and was loyal to the South.  "I can anticipate no greater calamity for the country than the dissolution of the Union. It would be an accumulation of all the evils we complain of, and I am willing to sacrifice everything but honor for its preservation."
